Volunteer
Mentor:
Being a mentor is one of the most amazing ways an adult
can volunteer because you can influence the life of
a young child that will leave a lasting impression.
Mentors help children learn to understand and communicate
their feelings to the world. Rather than focusing solely
on a child getting good grades, and staying out of trouble,
our mentors also focus on helping a child develop socially
and emotionally in the community.
• Mentor programs consists of
getting parents involved in a way that does not threaten
the youth-parent relationship.
• Mentors and youth will be match according to
shared interest. Although there is no perfect method
to matching a mentor and youth, age, gender, and education
of the volunteer matter much less than his or her outlook
on mentoring.
• Mentoring sessions will involve social and academic
activities, such as going to lunch, attending sporting
events, or visiting a variety of colleges.
A mentor is. . .
• A guide
• A companion
• A friend
• A listener
• A coach and cheerleader
• A positive role model
• An instructor
• An advisor |
